The Atlanta Journal from Atlanta, Georgia (2024)

2 GOPs to Seek Seats in Congress By WAYNE KELLEY Two Republican congressional candidates will formally announce within a few days their campaigns to unseat Democratic incumbents, a party source said Tuesday. State Rep. Rov Simkins of Augusta reportedly will make official his opposition to 10th District Rep. Robert G. Stephens Jr.

before the end of the week. And Dr. William Dowda of Atlanta was said to be moving L. F. Haulk Rites Set Wednesday The Atianta Journal Tuesday, June 7, 1966 toward a public declaration for The House seat of 5th District Rep.

Charles L. Weltner. The announcements will bring to five the number of official candidates offered by the Georgia GOP. THREE OTHER candidates are on deck. and the Republicans are hopeful of fielding contenders in eight out of the state's 10 congressional districts.

Rep. Simkins. GOP floor leader in the state House of Representatives, has been making appearances in the 10th District for several weeks. Dr. Dowda has reportedly been holding off on any official announcement while Fulton County Republicans screened potential candidates and planned strategy.

There is said to be no other 5th District candidate in the picture at the moment, however. ALREADY ANNOUNCED as candidates for Congress are State Rep. G. Paul Jones of Macon in the 6th District, Ben Blackburn of DeKalb in the 4th District, and Ed Chapin of Lookout Mountain in the 7th. Potential candidates in other districts are Porter Carswell of Waynesboro in the 1st, Mack Mattingly of Brunswick in the 8th, and Bill Mixon of Columbus and Steve Pace of Americus in the 3rd District now represented by potential GOP gubernatorial candidate Howard (Bo) Callaway.

The Republicans apparently are not going to field opposition to two Democratic incumbents, conservative Rep. Maston O'Neal of the 2nd District, and 9th District Rep. Phil H. Landrum of Jasper. Prostate Cancer And Viruses Believed Linked NEW YORK, June 7 (UPI)The possibility that viruses could be responsible for cancer of the human prostate gland has been raised by Dr.

Myron Tannenbaum of Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He said he found "virus-like" particles in layers of normal cells immediately surrounding cancerous prostate tissues. He reported finding them in thousands of samples. Because viruses are known to cause cancer in fowl, mice, and other experimental animals, cancer scientists have long believed they might be involved in causing some human cancers. But despite enormous research efforts in many laboratories, no virus has so far been implicated.
