Express condolences at ajc.com/obits DAHLBERG, Ruth 009440804 RUTH SMITH DAHLBERG Ruth Smith Dahlberg, 89, of Stone Mountain, died August 9, 2005. She is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Alfred William Dahlberg, and both of her beloved brothers, Wallace T. Smith and Martin C.

Smith. Ruth was born in Hempstead, Long Island, New York, on April 2. 1916. She attended the New York School of Fine and Applied Art (now known as the Parsons School of Design) for one year and then transferred to and graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with adegree in Home Economics in June of 1937. Ruth was a Big Orange fan for the rest of her life, and particularly enjoyed cheering on UT every autumn.

Ruth met Al Dahlberg in Knoxville while she was attending college, and she and Al were married in December, 1937. They lived first in Knoxville, and then in several other locations in the Southeast, before settling in the Atlanta area in 1940. Al had dreams of being a farmer, and Ruth and Al bought the property in Stone Mountain they named Hope Springs Farm in 1946. Al returned to work as an accountant to provide some income to the family, and Ruth became the farmer. Ruth learned to milk cows and feed pigs, as well as to care for the chickens.

Ruth also developed a business delivering eggs and produce to many customers, most of whom became friends. Ruth and Al were long-time members of the Decatur First United Methodist Church, and of the Fellowship Sunday School class. In 1961, Ruth and Al were charter members of the Allgood Road Methodist Church. Ruth and Al were accomplished dancers. For many years they went to square dances on Friday nights, and in later years went out ballroom dancing at various clubs around Atlanta at least once a month.

Ruth enjoyed belonging to the Allgood Garden Club for over 20 years. Most importantly, Ruth will always be remembered for her artistic talents. She taught ceramics classes, and later glass art classes at the Decatur-DeKalb YMCA for several years. She owned her own ceramic studio, Wishing Well Ceramics in the 1970's, and later created a studio in her home, where she taught classes for years. Many of the neighborhood children received their first art classes in in-home studio.

Ruth was an early member of the studio movement in glass art, and became a noted glass artist. She was a founding member of the Atlanta Glass Art Guild, and became amember emeritus when she was no longer able to work at age 86. Several nationally-known glass artists consulted with Ruth regarding her techniques for painting on glass. She sold her work at a number of galleries nationally and developed quite a following among the public for her work. She always said it made her feel wonderful to know that her work would live on after her.

Ruth became a member of Saint Timothy United Methodist Church about 15 years ago and attended the church and the Might group. Last year Ruth became a member of the Red Hat Society and was the oldest member of her chapter, the Floozie Reds. Ruth is survived by her four children.
