In the event of an accident or illness involving your pet, insurance provides the peace of mind needed to sign off on your veterinarian's recommended care — no matter the cost. 24Petprotect Pet Insurance may be a good option if you're looking for quick coverage.
Introduction to 24Petprotect Pet Insurance
24Petprotect, formerly known as 24PetWatch, offers pet insurance for dogs and cats with a range of annual limits — from $2,500 to $10,000. 24Petprotect is underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, which also underwrites for Hartville Pet Insurance. A subsidiary of major insurance company Crum & Forster, US Fire Insurance Company has an A (Excellent) financial stability rating from AM Best.
24Petprotect offers accident-only coverage and comprehensive coverage, with optional upgrades for preventive care. Coverage limits aren't the highest, and there's no unlimited coverage options. That said, the company does not limit eligibility based on your pet's age. However, you'll likely pay exorbitant prices for comprehensive coverage of a senior dog.
This brings us to the question of pricing. 24Petprotect is far from the cheapest pet insurance. Right off the bat, you may be paying over $100 for coverage, depending on your dog's breed and age. Additionally, premiums aren't guaranteed, so the company may increase your premiums as your pet ages, though 24Petprotect guarantees that it will not downgrade your coverage as your pet ages.
24Petprotect Pet Insurance Plans and Coverage
You can choose from two main coverage options from 24Petprotect. Keep in mind that no provider covers a pet's pre-existing conditions (defined as any condition occurring before coverage kicks in, or during a waiting period). That said, any illness or injury that is cured (meaning it's symptom- and treatment-free for 180 days) is no longer considered pre-existing.
All coverage commences after a 15-day waiting period, starting from when you purchase coverage.
Comprehensive Coverage
This comprehensive coverage takes everything from accidents and illness to behavioral issues — even hereditary and congenital conditions — into consideration and covers all related exam fees, diagnostics, and treatments (even chemotherapy).
Accident coverage kicks in when there's an emergency (a broken bone or lodged foreign object, plus myriad others in between), and illness coverage kicks in when minor (think UTI or digestive issues) and major (from arthritis and allergies to cancer) issues crop up. Treatment for inherited conditions that might not emerge until your pet is older, like heart disease and hip dysplasia, is covered, too. Finally, anxious and/or compulsive behavior (like excessive licking or destruction of your home) is also included.
This policy does not cover cosmetic procedures (like tail docking and claw removal), breeding costs, or preventive care like annual exams, vaccines, and screenings. It also doesn't cover prescription foods.
Accident-Only Coverage
True to its name, this type of coverage protects against new injuries and emergencies directly related to an accident (from broken bones and torn ligaments to lodged foreign objects and toxic ingestions) and includes all fees related to exams, diagnostics, and treatment — from stem-cell treatment and surgery to acupuncture and chiropractic care.
This type of policy does not cover cosmetic procedures, breeding costs, preventive care like annual exams, vaccines, and screenings, or any incident unrelated to an accident.

24Petprotect has a mix of reviews, receiving an average of 4.4 stars on Trustpilot and 2.2 on ConsumerAffairs. Customers seem to have a range of experiences when filing claims with the company. Some claims are filed and paid out without issue, while others are rejected after long periods of silence. Additionally, customers found the coverage limits frustrating, especially given the price of their coverage.
A common complaint against 24Petprotect is the quality of the customer service itself. According to reviews, customer service representatives were argumentative and rude. Additionally, reviews say representatives were tactless when working with customers who had recently lost a pet.
Another surprisingly common complaint was that 24Petprotect classifies euthanasia as an elective procedure, so a number of those claims were rejected.
